３月３１日から開始したこの新聞記事の翻訳も今回が最終回です。今回の課題の最初の文は日本語らしい、一見とらえどころのない文章です。このような文章は直訳しても英語として意味が通じにくいので、内容を租借して自分なりの解釈を反映した英文を書くという意識が大切です。

■課題
背景にはITを導入してもしなくても医療機関が受け取る診断報酬が同じという事情がある。「大半の医療機関は様子見」（大手情報企業）。
先行する医療機関でコストの大幅削減、患者数の増加などの効果が表れるのに伴い、IT化のペースは加速しそうだ。

■日本人の翻訳とネイティブチェック
The reluctance of many medical institutions to promote IT is attributable to the a medical-care system within which medical fees paid are not affected by the introduction of IT.
According to a major information company, most medical institutions are making adopting a wait-and-see attitude.
As medical institutions that have employed IT at in its early stages see tangible effects, such as significant cost reduction or increases in patients, switching to IT will be accelerated.

■課題
ただ、医療機関の本格的なIT化は始まったばかりだ。医療・福祉分野での情報システムの国内市場規模は２０００年で三千億強とみられる。１９９５年の１．５倍以上に拡大したが、市場の大半を占めるのは院内の効率化を狙ったシステム。患者にもメリットがある電子カルテを導入している医療機関はまだ全体では１％～数％にとどまる。遠隔診断も一部の先進的な医療機関が実施しているだけだ。

成長市場を狙って企業も動き始めた。富士通、NECなど情報系企業に加え、臨床検査受託のビー・エム・エル（BML）など異業種が電子カルテを相次ぎ発売。東芝や三菱化学子会社は病院が撮影した画像を別の場所にいる医師が診断する遠隔診断の支援事業に乗り出した。

■日本人の翻訳とネイティブによる修正
Some enterprises have begun their move towards advance into this promising market.  BML, a laboratory test servicing company from a different business sector, as well as information-based companies such as Fujitsu and NEC have successively released an electronic medical record system one after another.  Toshiba and an affiliate of Mitsubishi Chemical have set out on the business of assisting in telediagnosis where so that images acquired in a hospital can be diagnosed by a physician at a distant place.

◆次の文<BML, ..., as well as ... Fujitsu and NEC have successively released an electronic medical record system>では、主語が<BML>、<Fujitsu>、<NEC>と複数あるのに対し、市場に投入した「電子カルテ」が<an electronic medical record system>と単数で表現されているのは「数の不一致」ではないか、つまりこの書き方だと「<BML>、<Fujitsu>、<NEC>の３社が共同で１台のシステムを発表した」と解釈されるのではないか、と思われた方はいないでしょうか。

これは「数の一致（呼応）の問題」と呼ばれており、文法として一定の規則が定められていますが、その知識がないと混乱をきたします。
